Why SMARTER Goals?

The Cat only grinned when it saw Alice. It looked good-natured, she thought: still it had very long claws and a great many teeth, so she felt that it ought to be treated with respect.
"Cheshire-Puss," she began, rather timidly, as she did not at all know whether it would like the name: however, it only grinned a little wider. "Come, it's pleased so far," thought Alice, and she went on. "Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?"
"That depends a good deal on where you want to get to," said the Cat.
"I don't much care where " said Alice.
"Then it doesn't matter which way you go," said the Cat.
"—so long as I get somewhere," Alice added as an explanation.
"Oh, you're sure to do that," said the Cat, "if you only walk long enough."

To find a treasure, it helps to have a map. A goal is a treasure you want to achieve, and SMARTER is the best way to set effective goals. This handy acronym will help you find your treasure.
S = Specific: Get detailed about what you want to want. Saying that you want to "make more money" is not specific, it's a wish. Answer the question with details: How much money?
M = Measurable: How will you know you've achieved your goal? By gross income? Net income? Volume of sales?
A = Achievable: Let's say that you want to raise $500,000. Is raising that much money realistically doable? Yes, you should have to stretch to reach your goals. But keep in mind that SMARTER goals are designed to help you take realistic actions rather than hope for miracles.
R = Results oriented: Goals that are based on measurable results will help you keep your eye on the ball.
T = Timely: By when is your goal to be achieved?
E = Evaluate: Goals are like seeds: they require nurturing. From time to time check how well you are doing to achieve your goal.
R = Redo: If (and sometimes when) it becomes clear that you are unable to achieve a goal, revise it to ensure you succeed.
